Market Overview

  • The home office furniture market represents approximately 20% of the total office furniture market, a proportion that has grown in recent years as occasional home working has morphed into a more regular occurrence and, for some, a permanent state.
  • The more regularly people work from home, the less they are prepared to ‘make do’ with ordinary domestic furniture. It is therefore not so much the increase in numbers of homeworkers that affect the home office furniture market, but an increase in the number of people spending a large proportion of their week working at home, that drives demand. These are the trends we are watching to understand impacts for the home office furniture market.

Product Sectors

  • The main product sectors in the Home Office Furniture market are desking, seating and storage.
  • Significant changes in the desking product range have been influenced by changing technology with both computing and telephony becoming more compact, mobile and less dependent on wires and processing units.
  • Ergonomic concerns have driven the seating market as awareness grows of the importance of good posture and back support while working.
  • Moves towards paperless offices have reduced demand for storage, for the home office market there is particular need for furniture to work in a home environment.

Market Prospects

  • The great readjustment currently taking place in working practices is providing a boost to the Home Offices Furniture market. Expecting the 2020 move to working from home to be temporary, many did not invest in specific office furniture for home. Those who find themselves continuing in that mode will be looking to invest in creating the right home office environment for the long term, which should lead to growth for the sector in the coming year. However, this growth will only be sustained if there is a greater move to homeworking, as yet this is by no means certain with productivity studies still to conclude and many of the social and collaborative elements of work suggesting the need for collective office spaces as a key part of how we work.
  • The closure and clearance of many offices in 2020/21 has released stock of good pre-used office furniture. However only a small proportion of this is likely to find its way to the home office sector as, while robust, it is often of a size and proportion unsuited to home office environments.

Supply and Distribution

  • The Home Office Furniture sector is largely supplied through online (or catalog and mail order) channels, either from specialist office suppliers or, more commonly, from home furniture suppliers offering a home office selection in their range. Much of this furniture is supplied flat pack for home assembly.
  • The market space is less attractive for office furniture dealers as products tend to be of lesser value with less opportunity to add value; there is scope, however, in operating contracts whereby companies equip their homeworkers. Imports have long been a significant feature of the Office Furniture market with China and Europe as major suppliers.

AMA Research’s 2021 edition of the Home Office Furniture Market report is an insightful view on the implications for suppliers and product manufacturers of the changes in our workplaces. Incorporating data and views on the recent shift to homeworking and its likely impact, along with the more long-standing trends of technological advances and design choices this report looks at demand levels in each product area of desking, seating and storage. The timely report specifically focuses on the Home Office Furniture market, a distinct sector of the Office Furniture market, as this is a rapidly evolving space with definite consumer needs and immediate demand.
